After months of training in the gym, it was finally time to head to Snowdon and hike the UK’s 3rd biggest mountain OVERNIGHT!!
To say I was slightly anxious would have been an understatement! I live in 3” heels and have never so much as scaled a hillock let alone a mountain but the challenge had been set and blown away by the generosity of family, friends and colleagues, I was determined to smash it to raise as much cash as possible for the Care Workers Charity!!
Bags packed - waterproofs, boots, thermals, socks, hats, gloves, a monster bag of pick & mix sweets, bananas (Mom’s instruction) and a hip flask… we arrived to register at 11pm ready to start at midnight.
Nothing could have prepared me for the start of the hike, the severity of that initial steep climb and then the almost vertical section half way up. Heart racing and shortness in breath was soon forgotten when the Freeth boys, James & Phil pulled out the rhubarb & custard sweets!!
One foot in front of the other, my Sister, a seasoned hiker, said just keep plodding and that I did, at quite a pace too to keep up with my 6’3 long legged partner in crime, our CEO Howard!
At 2.28am through the rain, wind and with just a simple head torch to light the way we reached the Summit! Amazing!! White mice & jelly beans and a drop of David Beckham’s most marvellous whisky to celebrate… and yes Mom a banana too!
We’d missioned at such a rate that the hope of the sunrise from the Summit was about 2 hours away so a slower saunter back down was intended until the coldness set in…
We reached the bottom with a time of 4hrs 28 finishing in the top 10 of over 100 hikers! 18kms stomped and according to the watch, 209 flights of stairs climbed!!!
6am - Medals collected, photo taken and boots off… the warmth of a shower and sleep was calling…
A truly phenomenal experience, incredible. So much laughter, support and friendship and raising almost £700 for the CWC, amazing.
Two proud little boys have placed my medal alongside their football medals and trophies… what an honour!!
